The Zimbabwe Union of journalists has its roots in the Guild of Journalists formed in the early 1950s by journalists who had been active in what had been the Rhodesia branch of the South African Society of Journalists (SASJ).

ZUJ endeavors to represent members in their pursuance of freedom of expression within the confines of ethical journalism by promoting and reflecting media diversity of professional standards while fighting for good working conditions and mediating in labour disputes.

To become a real voice of journalists in a democratic Zimbabwe that guarantees and upholds media pluralism, freedom while adhering to professional ethics under favourable working conditions.
